Think the humble oat is only good for Golidilocks and the three bears? Think again. With more nutrients than most grains and loads of ways to add them into your diet (not just porridge), oats are a great addition to your diet.
We asked TREK bars, our official protein bar partner, about the science behind why oats are so important on and off the Tough Mudder course.
Oats are Rich in Nutrients
Oats are an excellent source of fibre and carbohydrates, and they contain a considerable amount of fat and protein in comparison to other grains.
They’re also packed with essential vitamins and minerals that contribute to a healthy lifestyle – not so humble now eh?
Oats are Proven to Help Improve Performance
Not only are oats a great form of carbohydrate (supplying your body with the energy it needs to workout) they’re also digested at a slow rater, meaning they release energy more slowly keeping you going for longer, while B vitamins will help you convert carbohydrates into energy.
Beta-glucan fibre is also present in oats, this bad boy will keep your blood glucose in check while significant levels of iron will keep oxygenated blood moving to your muscles.
Oats can Help You Lose or Maintain Weight
Oats are great for regulating the digestion and absorption of nutrients, plus they keep you feeling fuller for longer reducing the temptation for snacks.
Oats are High in Protein
Oats are great for anyone taking on a demanding physical activity like Tough Mudder. They’re high in protein (40 grams of oats will provide around 7 grams of protein) and are a great way to easily up your protein intake. Not sure how to incorporate them into your meals? Oats are the main ingredient in TREK bars, which you can find out on course and at the finish line.
